The accumulation of crises faced by the people continues to take its toll.
Today, a large part of the Lebanese population is completely numbed and geared towards survival mode. The material, psychological, economic and social damage has affected everyone in the country.
And yet against all odds, over the last couple of weeks, defiant men and women relentlessly refuse to surrender to mafia rule.
“Elna, elna, hayda el watan elna” (Ours, ours, this nation belongs to us), screamed marching hordes of men and women, who have chosen the path of continued resistance. Many claim the only choices left are “migration, suicide or confrontation with the regime”.
Since 17 Teshreen, the thawra coalition had focused on four main goals: government resignation, transitional government, judicial reforms and electoral roadmap.
While the thawra greatly succeeded in the first objective, so far, it has fallen short of the remaining three.
The thawra coalition has tended to focus on these short-term goals due to the desperate state of living conditions. Certain non-urgent topics that could be sources of contentions have not necessarily been addressed in detail.
Despite the spread of coronavirus and the August 4 explosion, thawra political activities have continued to be geared around social support to replace the absent state and working on unifying thawra factions into one bloc, which is showing great progress.
Certain disagreements do exit on future matters related to decentralization, economic policy, secularization and Lebanese security policy.
Other disagreements have been related to thawra strategy. Should our energies be geared towards securing an empowered transitional government or fair elections? Instead of the central government, should we focus on unions, syndicates, municipalities and grassroots activities?
From a larger point of view, the thawra coalition continues to gain momentum. Further consolidation into stronger fronts that can converge towards one electoral list, one national project will be the key factor that tips the internal balance in favor of the heroic rebels.
